A ring of burgundy flowers runs around a band of pale sky blue, each one embroidered by hand with a bright yellow centre. Above them, a deep burgundy crown carries a Fair Isle diamond-and-star pattern picked out in blue; below, a slate-blue ribbed turn-up cuff.

Hand-knit in Bolivia from 100% alpaca and lined throughout with soft black fleece. The flowers are the part worth looking at — they are stitched on after the knitting is finished, one at a time, which is why no two hats wear them in quite the same place.

Alpaca is warmer than sheep's wool at the same weight, sheds moisture instead of holding it, and carries no lanolin — so it stays soft against skin that finds wool itchy.
